Setting Mirror Tiles

Mirrored glass makes beautiful wall tiles. Preparing the walls correctly is the key to a successful, long lasting installation.

We recommend using Black or Gray Mirror-Backing Paint to protect the mirror coating for thin-set and mirror mastic applications.

You could also apply your mirrored tiles with mastic - see our Mirror Mastic Instructions.

However, we think you would achieve more professional results setting many small tiles in thin-set following the instructions below.

Cutting Mirrored Glass

When you cut a mirror, you need to score the glass side (not the painted side) with a glass cutter. Use the score and snap method to score the glass with a straight-line glass cutter such as those made by Toyo, Fletcher, or Perfect Score. For drilling, use a diamond drill bit well lubricated with water. Dry the mirror carefullly to avoid water getting into the silver.

Wall Surface Preparation

The wall must be flat, clean, dry and free from frost, grease and loose materials. On porous surfaces such as brickwork, plaster, plywood, and block work, the surface must be primed before proceeding with the application of the adhesive.

Crack Suppression

The use of a crack suppression membrane is required. Many substrates may continue to cure and shrink over a period of months, and a crack isolation membrane may prevent shrinkage or movement of the substrate.

Thin-set Mortar

We recommend Laticrete 254 Platinum thin-set. It is available in gray or white and gray is recommended however it is up to you to make this aesthetic decision. Tiles must be back buttered to ensure proper bonding. A 1/16" space should be left between the tiles to accommodate movement of the glass after installation. If butt jointed, the glass may crack over time due to thermal expansion and contraction.

Grouting

Grouting is optional and mirror tiles are often left ungrouted except in wet areas. Always use a non-sanded grout. Take care not to scratch the surface of the tile while spreading and cleaning the grout. Clean with non abrasive, non acidic mild cleanser and a soft cloth.

Many thanks to Scathain for sharing their experience with mirror tiled walls.
