Some mirrors - often those imported from Asia - are made with aluminum instead of silver.
The manufacturer places the glass in a high temperature vacuum chamber and vaporizes aluminum onto the surface. The reflective coating is then protected with backing paint.
Aluminum does not tarnish as easily as silver, but we have developed techniques you can use to distress these mirrors.

How to find out if a mirror is aluminum or silver: Strip off the backing paint and apply either Aluminum Remover or Silver Remover Aluminum Remover does not dissolve silver. Silver Remover does not dissolve aluminum.
