Aluminum Mirrors

Antiquing an Aluminum Mirror

Some mirrors - often those imported from Asia - are made with aluminum instead of silver.

The manufacturer places the glass in a high temperature vacuum chamber and vaporizes aluminum onto the surface. The reflective coating is then protected with backing paint.

Aluminum does not tarnish, but we have developed techniques to distress or 'antique' these mirrors.
